On Saturday 14th May, Howden CC entertained Hornsea CC. Prior to the match, captain Matt Smith graciously accepted a framed painting of a game of cricket held in the Ashes from Mrs Rita Turner. Her husband Gerry was a regular spectator of Howden Cricket and will be sadly missed by all the club
Hornsea won the toss and chose to field first on what appeared to be a lively wicket. Hornseas opening bowler Liam Hanna, surely had his 'champagne moment', clean bowling Damien Sharp first ball of the innings. With what appeared to be the best bowling attack that Howden had faced so far, nerves began to twitch. Would Howdens new batting line up withstand the Hornsea onslaught. James Smith cooly approached the crease and with older brother Matt, began to rebuild the innings. The ball was seaming and cutting around making life as a batsman very difficult. However Matt Smith began to find his feet and began to drive and cut some good deliveries. The two Smiths between them put on 50, before Matt Smith received a looping reverse long hop from Tom Fraser, clean bowling him for 26. Yet another Matt Smith (Jnr) then came to the crease and after 3 years in the wilderness played some sweet shots finding the boundary on 3 occasions. M.Smith (jnr) then edged to slips for a lovely cameo innings of 14.
Dick Salmon the came to the crease and continued in the vein of the previous two Matts. With his 'one shot', he proceeded to dispatch the ball to all 4 corners of the playing field for a very classy quickfire 48 before being bowled. The remaining Howden batsman provide good support for James Smith whose unusually workman like innings had now seen him pass 50 and was proving to be the backbone of the innings. Smith however departed for a gritty 64.
With 9 wickets down, Howden juniors Jack Allen (13yrs) & Billy Salmon (14yrs) showed maturity beyond their years, as they both withheld some hostile bowling to prevent Hornsea claiming full bowling points. Howden had posted a score of 177-9.
A marvelous tea was put on by Mrs Jane Kew at half time. Many thanks from the club.
Hornsea provided some dogged resistance for opening bowlers Eddie Salmon and Danny Kew. Both seemed to be struggling from their respective ends so the captain decided to try something different. Kew was replaced at the Treeton Rd end by Dick Salmon and in his first over took the wicket of J.Andrew for 15. Kew then came back on at the pavilion end and quickly found that old metronomic action that we all know and love, tying the end up and picking up a wicket en-route to figures of 9-0-26-1.
Wickets were hard to come by and Hornsea appeared to be holding their own. Eddie Salmon came back at the Treeton road end bowling a lot better finishing with figures of 9-0-35-1. However the match was slipping away from Howden with Hornsea having set up a firm foundation of 103-3 with 15 overs in to go. Captain Matt Smith decided to bowl himself to try something different. This proved to be a good move as he claimed a wicket with his second delivery. With his fourth delivery he removed the backbone of Hornseas innings N.Fraser, with his reverse wanger. Fraser went for a comendable 52.
With Dick Salmon at the other end howden were now back on top. Salmon finishing with figures of 12-2-28-2 and Matt Smith 4-0-13-3.
The captain then turned to Matt Smith (jnr) to bowl. With figures of 3-1-4-2 he left Hornsea wobbling. With an ironic twist, two Hornsea junior players came in to bat and mirrored Howdens juniors, batting the overs out commendably, leaving Hornsea 138-9.
Another win for Howden putting them 2nd in the league. Man of the Match was James Smith for his 64.
Howden travel away to Skidby CC this coming Saturday.
Makes me proud to be the chairman of a club of such stature!
