Saturday 30th April saw weekend cricket return to the Ashes in Howden for the first time since last century. Glorious weather across the region greeted the Howden cricket team, almost as if ordered especially for the occasion. Prior to the match, club captain Matt Smith from Howden, graciously accepted a cheque from The Press Association for the sum of £250, presented by P.A director Margaret Hicks. Winning the toss gilberdyke chose to bat on a dry wicket. This proves to be a dubious decision however as Howden opening bowlers Eddie Salmon and Andy smith, proceeded to take wickets quickly ably assisted by tight keen fielding around them. Smith ending with figures of 6-2-9-3 and Salmon 6-1-9-1. Howdens captain then turned to the clubs spin specialist Jack Allen and old time swing bowler Danny Kew. Both bowlers bowled to the by now slightly windy conditions perfectly Allen posting figures of 5-0-12-2 and the irrepressible Kew 5-1-14-1. Dick Salmon then entered the fray and within 4 deliveries had wiped up any remaining wickets showing figures of 0.4-1-0-2 leaving Gilberdyke all out for 57. In reply Matt Smith and Damien Sharp made a poor start with Smith going for a duck and Sharp going for a low score of 8 after receiving a 'snorter'. James Smith (22no) and Stuart Silvester (10) provided stability to the innings taking Howden within sight easily of their required target. However an infamous Howden collapse almost beckoned as Silvester, D.Salmon and youngest son Billy Salmon all went in the space of a few balls. Eddie Salmon strode to the crease and showed everyone how it should be done by stroking his first delivery back over the top for 4 runs and winning the match in the process. Howdens first match and first win in which proved to be a fantastic day for the club.

Steve Silvester was keen last time I spoke to him? Otherwise there's only 4 originals on that list from last year if you're struggling Damo, there should be others barring me?!

Hi,
Can all those playing on Saturday get there at 1pm pls. We really need to roll the new wicket a lot with the heavy roller.
Cheers,

Great result last night for our Thursday League boys. Skittled Eggbrough for 44, Jack Allen pick of the bowlers with 3.2-2(m)-4(w)-2(r), everybody bowled well. Howden making easy work of a small target for a change taking 6 overs to knock them off, new signing James Beaton with 30 no. Some impressive players on display all round.... good chance of a trophy season and promotion back to where we should be! Pick of the moment as Egg' went confidently out to field, warning Capt Damo to watch out for 'our fiendishly quick bowler', then Capt enquiring which one the fast bowler was after 2 overs! Well done all!

Well said Dick, many hands down early, we need at least 6 to drag the big roller up and down.... please don't presume 6 'others' will turn up. There looks to be a nice window of fair weather between 1pm and dusk after an otherwise dodgy forecast!
